Caribbean food, made in Lima.
Flaky, yellow-crust patties, ginger drinks and the island’s music, at Lima’s ferias (pop-up markets).
Where we are this weekOrder on WhatsAppWhat is a patty?
Jamaica’s best-known snack. It looks like an empanada, but it isn’t one: it’s a half-moon of flaky pastry, sealed with a fork.
- Why is it yellow? Today the pastry usually has turmeric or curry powder in it. In the 1940s it had a touch of annatto (achiote).
- Inside: beef seasoned with thyme, scallion, allspice and Scotch bonnet pepper, a cousin of Peru’s ají limo.
- How Jamaicans eat it: inside coco bread.
King Kion
In Jamaica it’s ginger; in Peru it’s kion. Same root. All three drinks have it.
Ginger Water
Ginger water, the simplest of the three.
Ginger Sorrel
Hibiscus and ginger, the pair behind a Jamaican Christmas.
Ginger Beer
Sparkling ginger, with a story from two islands.
Kool Tingz Mix
A new mix of Jamaican music every week: ska, reggae, dancehall and more. It’s what plays at our stall.
See all the mixes (page in Spanish; the music needs no translation).
